About L450

This genealogy blog is for all L450 researchers as well as F445 researchers. If you are wondering what I am talking about, then check out this explanation of a soundex code. You really cannot research the Llewellyn surname and its derivatives without understanding the significance of the soundex concept and how our surname became so variegated.

Our ancestors were not so literate that they knew how to spell their own surnames, in fact most could not read or write. Therefore, many of our ancestor’s records were written by the more literate members of society. When these scribes asked what our ancestor’s name was, they heard but did not themselves know how to spell what they heard. Sure, Smith or Jones was easy for them to spell, but not so for our Welsh surname. That is why in some records our L450 ancestor’s names were spelled Lewellin or Lewallen or even Flewellin.

Where did the F come from? In the Welsh language the first double consonant Ll is pronounced with a rush of air across the lips. The scribes thought they heard an F sound and therefore they were the ones who gave rise to the Flewellens, Fluallens, Flewellins, etc. that we see today.

So, as a researcher, do not assume that because you find a record of a Llewellyn and your name is spelled Luallen that you are not related – the same holds true for a Lewellen and a Flewellen – take the time and check it out.
